Tom joins the Invisalign smile club
Attorney Tom Olsen: About two months ago, I started Invisalign. I started it with Dr. Jeff Martin right here in Orlando. I'm 63 years old, it seems like late in life to start Invisaligns but boy, something had caused my teeth to shift very badly so I had a bad bite, very uncomfortable for me. I went got Invisalign with Dr. Jeff Martin here in Orlando a couple of months ago. As they were winding up their first appointment with me, Dr. Martin looks at me, and he goes, "Welcome to the smile club." That really hit home with me. Since then, man, I have been going-- I've been going-- Not going out of my way but I consciously think about smiling more. I'm spending all this money on these teeth, and I want to show these teeth off, although they're not-- I got another year and a half to go with Invisaligns but in the meantime, I'm smiling at people. You've heard that term muscle memory?
Attorney Chris Merrill: Yes.
Attorney Tom Olsen: The more I smile, the more it gets to be muscle memory and I'm consciously, right now I'm trying to smile but I'm also finding myself unconsciously smiling a lot. I think that that's a great thing.
Attorney Chris Merrill: Absolutely. I am so happy for you that you're doing it and especially that you want to smile more.
Attorney Tom Olsen: Well, here's the advantages I'm finding to smiling. Number one, when I'm smiling at people, it causes them to want to smile back at me.
Attorney Chris Merrill: Exactly.
Attorney Tom Olsen: I tell you it is so pleasant to have somebody engage in conversation whether it's a server at a restaurant or somebody elsewhere where they're smiling at you. It's just pleasant, pleasant to be around.
Attorney Chris Merrill: Very much. Thank you for sharing that.
Attorney Tom Olsen: Here's the other thing I love about smiling and that is this, is that I have often said something to somebody in jest, and they don't quite understand what I'm trying to say, and they don't really know how to interpret it. I'm mean it in a friendly way but I can tell that they don't really understand what I'm trying to convey. But I tell you what, if you're smiling at somebody, those teeth are showing, man, they get it. They know where you're coming from and it's in a friendly manner.
Attorney Chris Merrill: I think that is an excellent point. You are absolutely right that sometimes when anybody when you say something, the facial expression really make clear what the intent was and if you make a comment and you were smiling with that, they get it and understand it in that friendly way.
Attorney Tom Olsen: I think it also comes down to this basic human nature when you meet a stranger, left over from back in the caveman days and you don't really know what their intentions are, man, when you greet somebody, a stranger with a smile, your teeth are showing, you got that wide-open smile, they get it right away that you're a friend.
Attorney Chris Merrill: They do and it's a really wonderful feeling. Also, as well, is you never know by doing that, you may have made their day or week.
Attorney Tom Olsen: I like that, that's a nice thought too. Invisalign has been a very easy process for me. When I got them from Dr. Jeff Martin, he goes, "Tom, I had a client. She was 75. Then she did Invisaligns and said it's the best thing that she ever did." Oh my God, it is so good to start getting my bite in order. It's already better but it's going to be perfect by the time we finish it. When you see me, you'll see me smiling with my teeth like this.
Attorney Chris Merrill: Yay. Or they can see you smiling more on our videos on our YouTube channel.
Attorney Tom Olsen: I think that would be important that on our videos, my teeth are showing like this. Even while I'm walking around the office, you can smile without showing your teeth, and I feel like I'm smiling but it is still open to interpretation about what's Tom feeling, where is he coming from? But even walking around the office was a staff now, I'm smiling with this big smile, and guess what? They're smiling back at me. My smile causes other people to smile and that's a good thing.
Attorney Chris Merrill: We love you, Tom.
Attorney Tom Olsen: Thank you.
